In a cannabis plant there over 100 cannabinoids known, we all know about the hype of CBD and how it may be beneficial to us in many ways. But there are so many other cannabinoids that also can have a positive impact on our health. One, in particular, is called CBN, and what makes it so special is that there are studies to suggest it may be a great sleep aid.
What is CBN?
CBN is produced from the degradation or oxidation of THC. If THC is exposed to air and heat for an extended period, it breaks down to CBN, which is only partially psychoactive.
Although there is still need for scientific research on cannabinoids, studies suggest that CBN may provide numerous therapeutic benefits, such as its ability to promote sleep, stimulate appetite, encourage bone development, prevent glaucoma, and offer antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties.
CBN is mildly psychoactive, since it is ultimately derived from THC, even though it is oxidized, people may experience mind-altering effects.
Some people claim they experience it as a very fast and short high rather than THC, which can be more of longer intense high.
Potential Benefits of CBN for Sleep
The research into the therapeutic benefits of CBN is very preliminary. More studies need to be done, but it however at this point it looks promising. CBN is considered to be a sedative, in a study it is suggested for those that take CBN it may prolong sleep.
Ditch the Pills
There are many people that suffer from all sorts of sleep issues, with the western lifestyle it is a very common problem due to stress, being overworked and the daily rituals we go through. Many people are using dangerous sleep medications to try to help improve their sleep patterns. This can come with harmful side-effects and dependency issues.
Unfortunately, being numbed with dangerous pills can also interfere with our circadian rhythm.
There are better alternatives out there, you can get strains and products with high CBN, and products that are natural to help promote sleep.
Is there Side effects to CBN?
There is no documented case where any cannabinoid actually harmed somebody. However, there still are side effects people should be aware of when consuming CBN. Inexperienced users who consume a lot of CBN may experience effects such as:
These mild side effects are very similar to CBD and can easily be avoided by going slow and using smaller dosages.
Is CBN legal?
The Farm Bill in 2018 removed CBD and hemp from the Controlled Substances list.
However, it is a bit trickier than that. CBN is a by-product of THC, and CBN can be extracted from hemp although the process is complicated, CBN is not as abundant in hemp plants as CBD is.
By those standards as long as it meets the minimum requirement of .3% it should remain legal when extracted from the hemp plant.
How can you access CBN?
It is difficult for hemp CBD farmers to acquire CBN as opposed to an actual cannabis farmer that can produce CBD and THC. Especially when drug tests are needed, CBN might not be ideal for you as it does have a small amount of THC.
But if that is not a problem, CBN may be a great option for you in promoting a better sleep cycle. As manufacturing improves, CBN will be more widely available in the coming years.
